Important Information
Necessary Hockey Equipment
Hockey requires specific safety gear, but don’t worry, we’ll have plenty on hand for you to borrow! Please indicate on your registration form if you need any or all of the items listed below. We can provide hockey sticks if necessary as well. Borrowed equipment must be returned before leaving the rink.
At a minimum, the following equipment is necessary to participate:
- Shin guards
- (Padded) Hockey pants
- Ice Skates
- Elbow pads
- Hockey helmet
- Shoulder Pads (optional)
- Jersey (optional)
What to Bring
- Shin or knee high socks; the thinner the better.
- Loose-fitting sweatpants that will go over your child’s shin pads. These pants will get wet, so bring these separately from the pants your child wears to the rink.
- Loose-fitting sweatshirt
- Water bottle
- Hockey gear you already have (if any)
Arrival Instructions
Please arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the listed start time to check in, get your equipment, and dress your child in their gear. Dressing for hockey takes a little longer than other youth sports, so come early!
What to Expect When You Arrive
Once entering the rink, you’ll be directed to the check-in table. Upon checking in, a Cyclones volunteer will provide you with the equipment you need and answer all of your questions.
Next, we’ll direct you to the locker room. Here you’ll find additional volunteers to help you put on all equipment properly and assist you with getting on the ice.
What to Expect On the Ice
While there is no formal game or practice structure to the event, there will be several adult coaches on the ice to assist your child, especially if it’s their first time. Kids can take time learning to skate, practice hitting pucks, scrimmaging, or just getting comfortable on the ice.
Don’t be surprised if your child is a bit intimidated and hesitant to step on the ice, this is completely normal. Our coaches and current players will do everything they can to make your player feel as welcome as possible.
If your child has never skated before, our coaches will help them learn how to stand on their skates and get up when they fall. Eventually, we’ll assist them with taking their first strides.
For kids that can skate independently, it will be like an open ice session where they have the freedom to skate, stick handle and shoot as they please. Our younger players often end up playing small area games and simply enjoy having the freedom of the ice to themselves (with on-ice supervision, of course!)
